The hardest part of a kids' Halloween party is calibration: spooky enough that the nine-year-olds don't declare it babyish, gentle enough that the four-year-olds don't need carrying home. A haunted mirror hits the sweet spot, because kids control the scare themselves β it's their own face doing the haunting, and they can step out of frame whenever they like.
The setup
Same one-minute recipe as our birthday mirror guide: laptop webcam pointed at the party, effects on the TV via HDMI, Magic Mirror running in the browser. For Halloween, add: lights down, one lamp with a red or orange bulb, and the TV as the room's centrepiece rather than a corner station.
The haunted effect lineup
- π» Ghost β motion leaves glowing trails behind you. Walk slowly and you become an actual apparition. The single best costume-enhancer ever made for a bedsheet ghost.
- π’ Night vision β grainy green surveillance footage. Nine-year-olds immediately start filming a found-footage horror film. Let them.
- π X-Ray β inverted colours turn everyone skeletal. Pairs devastatingly well with face paint.
- π‘οΈ Thermal β predator-vision heat maps. Educational bonus: cold hands genuinely show up blue.
- π₯· Predator β a shimmering, half-invisible outline. The older kids' favourite, reliably.
- π₯ Echo β delayed copies of yourself follow your movements. Deeply unsettling in the best possible way.
Three games for the haunted mirror
- Ghost walk: one at a time, kids cross the frame in ghost mode as slowly and spookily as they can. The room votes for the most haunting crossing. Winner picks the next effect.
- Monster freeze: musical statues, but judged on the TV β when the music stops, freeze in your scariest pose. The freeze-countdown effect takes the photo for you.
- SΓ©ance selfies: at the party's peak, group photos in night vision. Send them to parents with no caption. You're welcome.
Everything runs on the laptop itself β no uploads, no cloud, no accounts β so the only thing haunted at your party is the television.
